Background: AIDA-I

The Adhesin Involved in Diffuse Adherence (AIDA-I) is an afimbrial adhesin that was first identified in 1989 by the laboratory of Dr Michael Schmidt (Univ. of Muenster), from a case of infantile diarrhea. Since then the gene coding for AIDA-I has been mostly found in clinical isolates of post-weaning diarrhea in piglets and it has been shown to be a significant virulence factor.
